Music is a huge part of our daily lives. Everywhere we go, everywhere we turn, there is music playing. Whether it’s on a radio station, in the grocery store, at the gym or elsewhere, we’re inundated with various types of music every day. It’s easy to tap your toes and sing along without really giving a lot of thought to what the song might be saying. Or, the message may be very clear, but you find that you just like to listen to it. Like so many forms of media and entertainment, music can be a vehicle for both lifting our spirits toward God or tearing them down. A few things to consider: The debilitating debt that countries assume just for the “honor” of hosting the Olympics (and the fact that the billion-dollar facilities they build for the Olympics often are never used again); the all-too-frequent scandals involving the bribing of Olympic officials; the fact that it was once the global stage for young, unjaded amateur athletes, and is now mostly professionals; the mind-boggling prices that advertisers pay to be seen on network TV, in spite of falling viewership; performance-enhancing drug use, just to name a few. In teaching His disciples to pray, Jesus gave us the Our Father. It includes a request that God faithfully provide us with our “daily bread.” This can have multiple meanings, but taken at face value it’s a petition to our heavenly Father for the food we need to be sustained in life. On Friday, Jerry and Debbie will welcome Dale Artho and Wayne Cleveland to the show. They have long been involved in agriculture, and recognize the intimacy and importance of food in our lives. Thrift stores are everywhere. Some people never consider shopping at them. Others frequent them for all sorts of things they’re looking for. The existence of thrift stores affords us all sorts of opportunities to live out our Christian faith. Those with excess clothing and other items can donate them, clearing out their own “stuff,” and making quality merchandise available to those who can’t afford to pay retail prices. And many thrift stores are operated by Christian ministries, so we’re helping them with their mission as well. And, of course, as noted above, those who have limited resources, or are otherwise trying to live a life of good stewardship, can very often find great things at prices far lower than in retail stores.
