Cardinal Francis George prophesied that he would die in bed (which he did), his successor would die in prison, and his successor’s successor would die a martyr in the public square. We’re seeing countless Christians losing their lives for the faith around the world. What’s coming in the United States and other geographic regions where blood being shed for the faith is not as common? Hebrews 12:4 says, “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” Too often, we think that “martyrs” are those who lived centuries ago, or who are killed for their faith “over there” (i.e. in far away countries). Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI served as the Church’s Holy Father from 2005-13. He was the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. But, like every pope, he is first and foremost a priest of the Church. On Friday, Jerry and Debbie will be joined by guest James Day, author of the newly-released book, Father Benedict. In the book, author Day examines the life and legacy of Joseph Ratzinger, one of the most intelligent and articulate priests and popes in recent memory. There are moments in life when we do things that are incorrect, illegal, improper or just downright silly. At times, we do these things without even realizing our mistake. It’s only after the fact that we look back and feel a little uneasy about what we’ve done. Occasionally, it’s because people point out our accidental blunders. Life is filled with worries, even though Jesus advises us not to be concerned and to trust completely in Him. There are even times when we fear certain things are going to happen – even though there is no concrete reason to think they will – and those fears become realized. On Monday, Jerry and Debbie will talk about the upcoming 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Or, what some people call the Protestant “Revolt.” It was led by a Catholic priest named Martin Luther. On October 31, 1517, he posted what are commonly referred to as his “95 theses.” Luther’s main contention was that the Catholic Church was selling indulgences. It was surely a time when the Church was in need of reform. But was a wholesale abandonment of the faith in order? History has revealed that Luther’s personal problems helped lead to his departure from the 1500-year history of the Christian Church. And we all know what that has turned into today. Drugs are a very serious problem in our culture. A lot of people today struggle with this epidemic. Many of us went through high school and into adulthood “experimenting” with drugs, only to realize that it wasn’t the right path to go down.
