When we have our children baptized in the Church, one of the most important decisions we have to make is in regard to the selection of godparents. These are individuals who will take a special interest in the spiritual growth and eternal life of our children. So, we should want to be very particular about whom we choose. The Church does have some basic guidelines, after which it’s really our choice as parents. On Tuesday, call and share your take on what you looked for in the godparents of your own children.

It’s obvious that our collective work ethic has changed over the years and decades. Long gone are the days when most of us earned a living by the sweat of our brow. These days, a large number of people have more sedentary jobs. Some analysts refer to these as “softer” jobs than were often held down by earlier generations of workers. There are also complaints by employers that they cannot find young people willing to take jobs that consist more or less of menial labor. On Monday, Jerry and Debbie will present a pre-recorded episode of the show that features several regular listeners and their takes on this topic. We’re heading into a long holiday weekend. Some of us will have to work to make a living, so it’s not really a “holiday” weekend. Most of us who work weekdays will have Monday off, making it an ideal opportunity to unplug, spend time with family and friends and recharge our batteries. But in today’s over-stimulated world, so many people find it hard to shut down and stay away from the things that occupy us in our normal workaday routines. How does this work for you? Are you able to set things aside for three days? Or do you find yourself reaching for your computer, watching e-mail on your phone, conducting business, etc? Objectively speaking, everyone needs God. We were all created by him, and are meant to know him and serve him, and, of course, to spend eternity with him in heaven. Subjectively, every person has to make his or her own choice to accept these facts and live accordingly. At some point in our lives, we all are likely guilty of either taking God and his gifts for granted, or outright turning away from him. This can be especially true of younger people. Many of them are known today as “millennials,” those who were born roughly between 1981-1996. Where are they in general with the whole “God” thing? Do they tend to believe? Or are they more free-spirited, and prone to thinking there is no God, or they don’t really need him in their lives, at least not right now? In John chapter 10, Jesus said that He has come that we may have life, and have it in abundance. What exactly does that mean for each of us? Whatever that is, we can enhance it or take away from it by the things we contribute to our lives. The more positive and healthy additions we make, the more “abundant” our lives will be. In a world full of negativity, how do you strive for the abundant life by focusing as much as possible on thinking and going positive things? It’s not some magic formula, but a way of truly building up our lives so as to be the very best version of ourselves, something God surely wants for each one of us. Tuesday is the Feast of St. Augustine, the great theologian and Doctor of the Church. He is well known for having led a life of moral depravity, including taking a mistress and fathering a child out of wedlock. Through the decades-long prayers of his mother, St. Monica, he eventually converted and became one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church. This should give us all hope that no matter what we have done in our lives, God’s mercy is strong enough to help us overcome our own sinful behaviors. Call and share how this has happened in your life, and whose prayers may have aided you along the way.

We have done a similar exercise before about the last day of your life, but what if you were only given one hour and then you knew your time was up on this earth. 60 minutes can go pretty fast, so how would you respond?  Interesting thought and not terribly far-fetched, because people get into accidents all the time and die soon after. So join us in this exercise and imagine you were told that you had one hour left to live and then you will finally meet the Lord.  What would be your first thoughts?  Who would you contact?  How would you react?  We are not guaranteed the future, so maybe this exercise will allow all of us to appreciate the present moment and be  more prepared from now on.  Call us at 1-833-288-3986.

Many of us struggle with looking at ourselves in the mirror.  We see the flaws that really no one else notices but we are certain that they are visible.  We become our own worst enemy.
