Are you a person of your word? Do you say that you are a good friend and truly practice that when you are needed? Are you really willing help others, especially when it requires a lot of your time? Can you honestly say that you’re dependable? It’s not bragging or being prideful if we answer yes to any or all of those questions. It’s something we should all strive for in our lives. On Wednesday, let’s have a candid discussion about this and see if we learn something about ourselves in the process.

We normally offer this opportunity to you as the first show of each month. But since that was Labor Day this month, here it is – your next chance to call and invite the world to join you in praying for the people and things that are in your mind or on your heart. We take calls, read your e-mails and share what you post on social media. We get to as many as we can. But at the end of the show we gather them all up and offer a live prayer before we close. On Friday, call Jerry and Debbie and tell the world how being born with or acquiring a disability at some point in your life has gone from being a burdensome challenge to a great blessing. Many times, God gives us these hidden gifts for our own spiritual growth and to inspire and encourage others who may have difficulty living with the same circumstances we are faced with.

Many people become disillusioned with or leave the Catholic Church because of painful circumstances in their personal lives. Some are divorced and remarried without an annulment. Others have participated in an abortion. There are individuals who live with same-sex attraction and are challenged by the Church’s teachings in that area. This could be a long list of people and their situations. Are you among them? Have you ever felt that you didn’t “belong” in the Church because of these or other factors in your life? If so, perhaps you are one of the people some would call “marginalized.” Let’s have a candid conversation about this on Wednesday, and, God-willing, help to bring some peace – and perhaps the return to a fervent practice of the Catholic faith – to your mind and heart.

When we have our children baptized in the Church, one of the most important decisions we have to make is in regard to the selection of godparents. These are individuals who will take a special interest in the spiritual growth and eternal life of our children. So, we should want to be very particular about whom we choose. The Church does have some basic guidelines, after which it’s really our choice as parents. On Tuesday, call and share your take on what you looked for in the godparents of your own children.

It’s obvious that our collective work ethic has changed over the years and decades. Long gone are the days when most of us earned a living by the sweat of our brow. These days, a large number of people have more sedentary jobs. Some analysts refer to these as “softer” jobs than were often held down by earlier generations of workers. There are also complaints by employers that they cannot find young people willing to take jobs that consist more or less of menial labor. On Monday, Jerry and Debbie will present a pre-recorded episode of the show that features several regular listeners and their takes on this topic. Objectively speaking, everyone needs God. We were all created by him, and are meant to know him and serve him, and, of course, to spend eternity with him in heaven. Subjectively, every person has to make his or her own choice to accept these facts and live accordingly. At some point in our lives, we all are likely guilty of either taking God and his gifts for granted, or outright turning away from him. This can be especially true of younger people. Many of them are known today as “millennials,” those who were born roughly between 1981-1996. Where are they in general with the whole “God” thing? Do they tend to believe? Or are they more free-spirited, and prone to thinking there is no God, or they don’t really need him in their lives, at least not right now? In John chapter 10, Jesus said that He has come that we may have life, and have it in abundance. What exactly does that mean for each of us? Whatever that is, we can enhance it or take away from it by the things we contribute to our lives. The more positive and healthy additions we make, the more “abundant” our lives will be. In a world full of negativity, how do you strive for the abundant life by focusing as much as possible on thinking and going positive things? It’s not some magic formula, but a way of truly building up our lives so as to be the very best version of ourselves, something God surely wants for each one of us. Tuesday is the Feast of St. Augustine, the great theologian and Doctor of the Church. He is well known for having led a life of moral depravity, including taking a mistress and fathering a child out of wedlock. Through the decades-long prayers of his mother, St. Monica, he eventually converted and became one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church. This should give us all hope that no matter what we have done in our lives, God’s mercy is strong enough to help us overcome our own sinful behaviors.
