I had an appointment and missed calling in to your program about helping others. I’ve recently had an experience something like what Jerry mentioned, about helping a homeless person and then losing track of them. I was helping this guy with food, money, and — yes — cigarettes. but, over 5 or 6 years, he went from being totally a mess in appearance and sleeping on a bus stop bench, to slowly and gradually taking care of himself better. There seems to have been something of a transformation, which I’d like to think involved him improving his self-image. And, now he’s gone — someplace. Looking back, I think it was good to witness his recovery and transformation. In my life, the most consistent spiritual experience has been the opportunity to help other people, especially people who could not repay me, and people many miles away who don’t even know me.
