The Bible To-Go

On Tuesday, Jerry and Debbie welcome Mike Stark to the program. Together with EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo and their creative team, he helped to develop and launch the Truth and Life Dramatized Audio Bible. It’s grown into an app that features all sorts of helpful faith tools. This is an example of how technology can be put at the service of the gospel. And, thanks to apps like this, we have no more excuses for not “finding time” to do things like study Scripture. Call with your take at Noon ET, with a reply at Midnight ET – 800-585-9396.

Long Lost Friends

While it’s easier than ever today to keep track of high school friends, former girlfriends or boyfriends, distant relatives, etc., time and distance still can move people to a place where they don’t communicate as often, don’t get to see each other much or just plain lose track of one another. Who would you like to track down if you had the chance? Share your take with Jerry and Debbie on Monday at Noon ET (with a reply at Midnight ET).

Are You a Thrift Store Shopper?

Thrift stores are everywhere. Some people never consider shopping at them. Others frequent them for all sorts of things they’re looking for. The existence of thrift stores affords us all sorts of opportunities to live out our Christian faith. Those with excess clothing and other items can donate them, clearing out their own “stuff,” and making quality merchandise available to those who can’t afford to pay retail prices. And many thrift stores are operated by Christian ministries, so we’re helping them with their mission as well. And, of course, as noted above, those who have limited resources, or are otherwise trying to live a life of good stewardship, can very often find great things at prices far lower than in retail stores. So, here’s the question: Are you a thrift store shopper? Or do you donate things to help others? Let’s talk about it today on Take 2 With Jerry and Debbie.

Return to Sender?

As we hurtle down the road of instant communication, it becomes easier and more frequent that we will hit the “send” button before giving sufficient reflection on what it is that we’ve written. A big part of the problem is that so much gets lost in electronic communication. Tone, inflection, intention, etc., are not part of the correspondence. We’ve become a society of communicators who use emojis or emoticons to convey these things. Hardly anyone has sent an e-mail, a text, or posted something on social media that they didn’t go back and re-read, and perhaps think that they shouldn’t have sent in the first place. This relates well to the spiritual life, as we are exhorted to be deliberate in our thinking and guard our tongue. Nowadays, the keyboard is our “tongue.”

What Spiritual “Gem” Is Your Area Known For?

Across the United States and around the world there are incredible “faith spots,” if you will. An area may be known for a very special retreat house, or a shrine, or a giant statue on a hill overlooking the freeway. So often, these are very little known outside the local areas. Yet, people could benefit from including visits to these places during their work trips or vacations. For those who can’t make a pilgrimage to Lourdes, or Fatima, or Rome, there are a lot of places in our own backyards where the presence of God is very profound. Share your take on this on Friday with Jerry and Debbie at Noon ET!

Moving Past Abortion

One of the greatest tragedies in human history is abortion. What often gets lost is the damage it does to the mother of the child, as well as any others (the father, the doctor, etc.) who play a role in the abortion. It’s an act that many people never find healing for, due in large part to the shame that’s associated with it. On Wednesday, Jerry and Debbie will discuss this huge issue at Noon Eastern Time. There IS hope. There IS healing. There CAN BE a future after abortion. Tune in and learn more!

Catholics in America

If you think the challenges we face as Catholics in the United States are new, you need to think again. Sure, the heat has been turned up in recent years, and shows no signs of abating. But the first Catholics to come to this country also faced a long uphill battle. Yet, they were undeterred – as we should be – in their efforts to bring the truth of Jesus Christ and His Church to our land. On Independence Day, Jerry and Debbie will visit with Russell Shaw, Church historian and author of more than twenty books, including his latest, “Catholics in America,” which profiles several of the pioneering Catholics who laid the foundation of the Catholic faith in the early years of the United States. Tune in and enjoy!

Can You Be Kicked Out of the Church?

Excommunication is a very misunderstood part of the Church. It actually takes a lot to be “excommunicated.” Many people think that if you commit this or that sin, you are automatically excommunicated. And, to be sure, there are certain sins that incur what’s called a “latae sententiae” excommunication, meaning, by the very act of committing that sin a person is excommunicated. A well known example is one who procures or participates in an abortion. But a lot of people think that “lesser” sins bring the penalty of excommunication. We’ll talk about this and, hopefully, put a lot of minds at peace. Our guest will be Dr. Carol Houghton, Chancellor for the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and a prominent canon lawyer. Join us at Noon ET (with a reply at Midnight ET).

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

On Wednesday, Jerry and Debbie welcome Dr. Edward Tick to the show to discuss a phenomenon that is afflicting individuals and families at an alarmingly increasing rate: post-traumatic stress disorder. We hear the phrase used a lot with regard to soldiers who return from combat deployments. But post-traumatic stress can be a harsh reality in the lives of many others as well, people who, at one or more points in their lives, have experienced traumatic and even life-threatening circumstances. This will be a very impactful broadcast, so we hope you will make time to tune in and call with your takes on this very sensitive topic.

Men, What Is Your Definition of Strength?

Today, Jerry and Debbie will field takes only from men on what their understanding of “strength” is. Does it mean something primarily physical, emotional, spiritual or something else? What about when St. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12 that it’s only when he’s “weak” that he is “strong?” Interesting conversation straight ahead. And, ladies, Friday is your day to call and share your take on the true meaning of beauty.
