I was truly shocked that the Church spent time and money commissioning a strange looking anime character as a mascot! We don’t need a mascot. If anything, a beautiful statue to commemorate the Jubilee Year could have been commissioned. I certainly wouldn’t show this character to my kids, it’s plain silly. I’m not sure why the Vatican needed a marketing plan for the Jubilee in the first place – the reality of God’s saving plan will always be relevant, and never need “re-branding”

I thought the lady’s comment on how the clergy providing a cheap gimmick of the faith was profound.

But before I share my perspective on the topic of animated media, I have to state the only reason that I had the pleasure of hearing the show today was because I had to leave work early to take care of my sick daughter. There’s a mean flu going through Houston yet God’s finger is even here.

As a faithful Catholic, we have the obligation to judge all things towards good or evil as well as to what degree. Insofar passive entertainment peals away virtue from one’s character it is evil; however so to is wasting a single word. The saintly few who live in a state of perfection prefer prayer and charity to all delights, and I pray God prunes me and my family towards that state.

The issue of “the fruit being ruined by the roots” is only true on a writer by writer basis or director by director case. This is true in Hollywood as much as it is in Tokyo. Also, in the case of illicit occultism, this is present in industries that have no place existing in America and Canada that export filth to the world as much as it does the shameful undercurrent groups of Japan that do the same but via anime.

My wife and I have chosen to primarily show our kids anime because American TV is excessively vulgar, and there are many good wholesome works that convey the depths of our Catholic faith, many of which were produced by Catholics in Japan. However, we do screen these anime shows and movies with great prejudice after we’ve watched them both in Japanese and English. (We also screen them based on their companion written media)

It’s worth conceding that we’ve created code phrases to explain to one another that a given show is not appropriate for children as well as another set of codes to state that it’s inappropriate for viewing out of concern for one’s soul.

There is a strong trend within Japanese culture to ensure youth are raised with a sense of proper-respect, dignity, and modesty. It just so happens that the Japanese are suffering for want of these three virtues as much as the rest of the world.

I wish to caution curbing the efforts of good people with good work that either build a proto-evangelion or outright preach the Gospel because their neighbors are sinners to the N’th degree.
